Emulation Photographer

 Hellen van Meene

For the emulation project, I'm choosing to mirror the work of Hellen van Meene.  Her photographs are really interesting and beautiful to me.  She does portraits of adolescent and young adult girls who are specifically chosen because they are not models or what we would consider to be standard beauties.  She works with young girls and also some young boys to show that although they may have imperfections as we all do growing up, they are all beautiful blossoming people.  She's really about making her models feeling normal and beautiful in a non-normal environment, hence her unique poses and scenes.  I love that her pictures have a positive impact on the girls and the way they view themselves after the shoot.
Hellen van Meene's portraits tends to follow a similar de-saturated style using more of a cyan tone then a warm tone.  For the most part, she only plays with natural light, as it gives her work more of a "painting" feeling.  Her pictures have a lot to do with discovering a girl's own femininity and naivety of self.  Van Meene tries her best to pull qualities out of her subjects one might not necessarily notice.  For this project, I would want to emulate the style of her photographs, concerning the natural light and the tone and colors.  I'm interested not only in portraying her style, but I want to mimic her demonstration of growing up and playing with femininity.
